For a game that starts with no exposition, has no cutscenes or even dialogue, I was surprised at how emotional the ending was. The game ends at exactly the right time, after about four hours or so. I became less frustrated at how simple the puzzles are, and started to appreciate how they just tickle my brain and let me go onward with my journey, without breaking the pace too much. Once I got into the right mindset, it became a very relaxing and almost spiritual experience, hopping across the snowy mountains, gliding through the sand and flying around on the back of majestic beasts. This isn't a gamey game, but it's more akin to Journey or Abzu. But after a while I realized that Omno isn't trying to challenge me. At first I was taken aback by its simple gameplay, as you just move your character, do some light platforming and steamroll through the easy puzzles, only to repeat the same thing in the next area. Omno drops you in its beautiful world without a word of explanation and takes you on a journey across different landscapes and biomes filled with little puzzles and imaginative creatures. Might burn down my house just to be sure. What this game lacks in tight platforming gameplay, cinematic cutscenes or rich lore and voice acting, it more than makes up for it with soul. Contemplating throwing out my computer just to be sure that giant black mass with the tentacle face won't come out of it and eat me. So naturally I mashed ESC and quit the game as fast as I could. It's fucking giant! All I can see is this black silhouette taking up most of my screen with like tentacles and this giant fuck off mouth rushing forward to eat me. What the FUCK just happened? I immediately turn around to start swimming towards my ship and just WHAT. I go to swim back to my pod.īANG! I lose 80% of my health immediately. I thought it was lighter at night considering the moon is so close? This is weird. Wow it's really dark - nearly pitch black - here now for some reason. If I were supposed to go here the textures wouldn't be weirdly low res right? Time to leave I guess. Guess it's just a boring landmark that you're supposed to judge directions off. The music's getting a bit tenser, but there's absolutely nothing here. It has weirdly low res textures compared to the rest of the game? Not sure if it's a glitch or not. I stock up on health kits and water bottles and ship out.īy the time I get there it's dark. Naturally I tried swimming to the big wreck early on, but it had radiation all around it so I couldn't go in! Well what is my radiation suit for if not for swimming towards literally the only landmark in the game apart from your escape pod thingo? Time to go explore the big thing. I finally worked out how to make the normal water and I have my radiation suit and everything. So about 2 hours in, I feel like I'm hitting my stride. You're on this hostile alien world and you're just sort of hoping nothing's too interested in eating you because you really wouldn't be able to stop them. Sounds cool!Īfter like half an hour I get why he warned me he found it "kind of scary". I knew nothing about it except it's a very good survival game set underwater on an alien planet. I bought Subnautica on recommendation from a friend.
